The University of Surrey’s new high quality modern student accommodation, designed with sustainability in mind, is the latest academic project to benefit from non-deleterious, premium performance insulation from Kingspan Insulation.
18,000m2 of Kingspan Kooltherm K3 Floorboard*, K8 Cavity Board* and K10 Soffit Board* were used in the £31.1 million development of Phase R1a of the Manor Park site in Guildford which is destined to provide accommodation for 4,500 staff and students.
Rob Howard of architects Broadway Malyan said "The proposed design for the accommodation was subject to a rigorous environmental impact assessment process, as the University’s planning application committed it to achieving a BREEAM rating of Excellent. Specifications for the build were made with this in mind."
The Kooltherm K-range can help developers to meet the BREEAM Excellent standard because of its superior thermal qualities. The extensive range of premium performance rigid phenolic insulants for roofs, walls and floors has a thermal conductivity of 0.021 W/m K making it the most thermally efficient insulation product commonly available.
The insulation is safe and easy to install as it produces no loose dust or fibres, making Kingspan Insulation a popular choice with installers. The product’s unmatched thermal performance also means that the thinnest possible insulant can be used to achieve the required U-values.
All new buildings on the Manor Park site are being designed and built using sustainable construction techniques. The scheme is the first phase of a £250 million, 120 hectare greenfield development providing a campus suitable for a modern, world class education and research based university.
The Kingspan Kooltherm K-range is manufactured to the highest standards under quality control systems approved to BS EN ISO 9001: 2000, and complies with all building and fire regulations with a fire rating of Class O / Low Risk. Furthermore, they produce negligible smoke obscuration when tested to BS 5111: Part 1 - an important issue when designing public buildings.
Kingspan Insulation has long been working towards providing sustainable solutions and practices. The company is the only insulation manufacturer to date to undergo a complete sustainability appraisal using SPeAR® (Sustainability Project Appraisal Routine) from Arup. The whole spectrum of Kingspan Insulation’s manufacturing activities at Pembridge was first examined in terms of their economic, social, environmental and natural resource impacts in 2004, with further annual assessments to monitor progress.
