Glasgow’s £842million ‘super hospital’ is on course to achieve a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating with the help of premium performance Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board
Queen Elizabeth University Hospital combines cutting-edge laboratory facilities with a 166,000 m2 adult and children’s hospital designed to manage 110,000 A&E patients every year. The 14 storey central hospital building has been designed by IBI Group with an extended quadrangular star layout which ensures all patient rooms not only have external windows, but grand views over the city. The project was delivered under budget and five weeks ahead of schedule by Brookfield Multiplex.
Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was specified to insulate a range of façade systems on the external walls of the project. The product delivers outstanding performance with thermal conductivities as low as 0.020 W/m.K. This contributed towards an overall U-value of just 0.15 w/m2.k, helping to minimise heating demand and assisting in the award of credits in the Energy section of the BREEAM assessment.
Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board has also been assigned a highest possible 2008 Green Guide Summary Rating of A+ and is certified ‘Very Good’ under BES 6001: Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products standard, meeting the requirements of the ‘Embodied Impact’ and ‘Responsible Sourcing’ BREEAM credits.
The hospital’s unusual design created additional challenges for specialist contractor, Prater. Operations manager, William Morrison, discussed how the Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board helped them to meet the requirements:
“The shape of the building with many curves, angles and land locked areas made the need for lightweight, flexible and robust material imperative. Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board provided the necessary thermal performance, ease of site installation and, most importantly, resilience to the West of Scotland weather until such time the overcladding was completed.”
Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board was the first insulation board to hold LABC Registered Detail for use in rainscreen systems. This can help to fast-track the building control checking and approval process. Its fibre-free insulation core is manufactured with a blowing agent which has zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) and low Global Warming Potential (GWP).
