Kingspan Insulation’s OPTIM-R External Wall System has provided the space saving solution to help transform ten under-insulated bungalows in Southend-on-Sea into highly energy efficient “Smart Homes”.
The retrofits have been funded as part of the £1.2 million ReallySmartHouse project which is being overseen by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council, South Essex Homes and architects, The Facility. The cavity walled bungalows featured u-PVC facades around the front and rear windows and allowed high levels of heat loss with an external wall U-value of 1.19 W/m2K. To improve thermal performance within the minimal cavity space behind the facades, 20 mm of the Kingspan OPTIM-R External Wall System was installed.
Kingspan OPTIM-R vacuum insulation panels feature a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and sealed in a thin, gas-tight envelope. This allows optimal thermal performance from the thinnest possible solution with thermal conductivities as low as 0.007 W/m.K.
Essex Insulation oversaw the installation and Contracts Manager Cliff Eves commented: “The project board wanted the exterior of the bungalows to look the same as they had before work commenced whilst also delivering a significant improvement in the thermal efficiency of the building envelope. The Kingspan OPTIM-R External Wall System
allowed us to achieve this within the tight cavities behind the facades and the final U-value for the external walls was just 0.20 W/m2
As the bungalows were occupied during the work we had to liaise with tenants for access and by fitting the Kingspan OPTIM-R External Wall System
we were able to complete the installation to the agreed schedule. Kingspan Insulation also provided us with in-depth technical support throughout the installation, ensuring we were able to get the best possible results.”
The Kingspan OPTIM-R External Wall System comprises of Kingspan OPTIM-R vacuum insulation panels, Kingspan OPTIM-R Fix fixing panels and Kingspan OPTIM-R Flex infill panels, which can be cut to fit around potential problem areas. Kingspan’s technical and design service supports all Kingspan OPTIM-R System installations, providing layouts for each application to allow the desired thermal performance to be met.
The ReallySmartHouse scheme has been jointly funded by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and the European Regional Development Fund. In total over 40 properties have been retrofitted including the installation of smart meters, photovoltaic panels and LED lighting. Remote monitoring on the properties will continue throughout 2014.
